FREEDOM STRUGGLE VILLAGE OF UKULPURA, DIST. MEERUT-2011

The great sacrifice of Narpat Singh had gone unsung for nearly 150 years and his story was lost in time (chapter ). A survey of the village of Ukhulpura was undertaken in 2011 by the author, Dr. K. K. Sharma, Maj. Himanshu and Dr. Manoj Kumar Gautam. It was found that Ukhulpura.

On 23rd of April, 2017, went on a tour of a cluster of Gurjar villages of Dist. Baghpat which had participated in the Great Uprising of 1857. On one of the primary villages named Bichpuri, Dunlop writes in 1858 - `'I then came to the Goorjur village of Bichpooree; this had taken an active part in all Sah Mull's misdoings, and deserved destruction .... number of armed men were leaving it as I arrived' .

The site of a martyr's memorial was finalised at the Gurjar freedom struggle village of Bali. A European gentleman of French descent developed an estate in the village out of the lands of the village which were confiscated by the colonialists as a punishment for their participation in the Uprising of 1857.

Shah Mull of Bijraul and the establishment of a Martyr’s Memorial

One of the greatest battles in the history of the War of Independence 1857 was fought in the region of Baraut and Baghpat to the west of Meerut. I call it one of the greatest battles not because of its scale, or its impact on the events of 1857. I call it great because here we see a direct confrontation

This is a village close to the famous village Bijraul of Baba Shah Mull. Half of this village which today is called `Bagi Patti‘(rebel part) joined the forces with Shah Mull during the battles that took place in Baraut and around. Even after the death of Shah Mull, this village continued to be one of the centers of revolutionary activity.

At freedom struggle village of Budhera we were told about the suffering of the residents of the village as all their land & properties were confiscated and auctioned off because of their having participated in the Uprising of 1857.

PROGRAM TO IDENTIFY VILLAGE OF THE GREAT UPSURGE OF 1857 AND SHAHEED NAMAN YATRA

This project was undertaken by the founders. Our guides and teachers have always been Dr. S. K. Mittal and Dr. K. K. Sharma. Mr. Manoj Kumar Gautam and Mrs. Rakesh Chauhan accompanied us on many of these trips and Mr. Sachin Kumar was our assistant.

Stone planted in memory of revolutionaries of 1857 at village Bichpura

Stone planted in memory of revolutionaries of 1857 at village Bichpura, Dist. Baghpat. The village was declared 'baghi' by the colonial authorities. The leader of the Great Uprising in this village and around was a revolutionary named Allah Dia. An interesting fact about this village is that it is primarily constituted of people of Baluch origin.

Johree

A memorial in memory of the martyrs of the Great Uprising of 1857 was inaugurated at village Johree. Many revolutionaries including their leader Sri. Jairam Singh were hanged in reprisal killings. Dunlop, who was an officer with the colonial field force which attacked Buraut on 17th - 18th July 1857 and subsequently escaped in the middle of the night due to the tough resistance given by farmer revolutionaries of the region.

At village Nimbali we met descendents of Sri. Gulab Singh Gurjar who was one of the leaders of the Uprising of 1857 in the region. Recorded memories of the patriarch of the family who is sitting in the foreground, including how Gulab Singh was found and martyred by the colonial forces.
